Summer Reads Book Reviews

Over the summer holidays we ran a reading competition for kids. Lots of children wrote in with a book review of the best book they had read over the summer, and one lucky winner received a Book Fairy voucher worth £30! Here you can read our pick of the best entries. To buy these titles please visit the shop or contact us - we can order any book in print.

Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

"Percy finds his worst fear comes true as he descends into the labyrinth. He comes across his arch enemy Luke. Will he survive or perish?

This thrilling book is perfect for people who like Greek mythology. The characters are as active as a springing tiger. I loved the suspense because it made me feel like I was in the labyrinth."

My Mum Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson

My Mum Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson

"This book is about Tracy Beaker's daughter, Jess Beaker. Jess is worried about Tracy's new boyfriend, Sean Godfrey. Sean is OK, but Jess really wants things to be how they were before, when it was just Tracy and her together.

I love this book for many reasons. I like Jacqueline Wilson's books and it is very interesting how the book is written from Jess' perspective. I also enjoyed finding out what happened next to Tracy Beaker."

The Faraway Truth by Janae Marks

The Faraway Truth by Janae Marks

"This book is about a girl who knows nothing about her birth Dad, but then at her 12th birthday she gets a letter from him...

My favourite part was the bakery where she has her party. I also like that you have to do lots of guessing."

Celeste, age 9

Dork Diaries: Puppy Love by Rachel Renee Russell

"The book is about a girl called Niki and she has a little sister called Brandina and she and Brandon found 7 puppies and one dog the dog was called Holly.

My favourite part was when Niki and Brandon rescue Holly and her puppies from fuzzy friends."

Toto the Ninja Cat by Dermot O'Leary

Toto the Ninja Cat and the Superstar Catastrophe by Dermot O'Leary

"Toto the Ninja Cat has already had two awesome adventures, this review is about Toto's third adventure at Catstonbury, an animal music festival where something fishy is going on.

What I like most about this book:

  1. I love the whole series so much.
  2. This book is very, very funny.
  3. Toto has a very cheeky brother called Silver.
  4. There is a very cute little cat called Socks."

George, age 7

Scarlet & Ivy by Sophie Cleverly

Scarlet and Ivy: The Lost Twin by Sophie Cleverly

"This book is about Ivy, who thinks her identical twin is dead and she has to take Scarlet's place. But later on she sees her sister's diary, which only has one page. It's a thrilling mystery. Ivy needs to find her sister and get it back to normal, now they think their mystery is done, but is it...?

I like that it was a mystery and the character needed to solve it and pretend to be her sister."
